Outing report- 3rd March 2013 Bird ringing Igwalagwala Forest, Melville

Attendees: Liz Blomeyer, Stan & Val Culley, Stanley & Asothie Gengan, Sandy Olver, Frans & Lana du Plooy, Andy Ruffle, Ron & Elaine Whitham. (11 attendees).

Despite perfect weather conditions for this morning’s ringing session, the birds were not particularly co-operative. Only six birds were ringed- 1 x Brown Scrub-Robin, 2 x Lemon Dove (male & female), 1x Olive Thrush and 2 x immature Green Twinspot.

It was very nice to see the comparison between the male and female Lemon Doves and of course the immature Green Twinspots were very special. The immature twinspot can be distinguished from a female by the lack of spots on the flanks. You can see the spots just starting to develop in the photo below.

There was also a re-capture of a Terrestrial Brownbul, which was originally ringed on 2nd Feb 2011 in the same location as an adult female.

Birds recorded: Natal Spurfowl, Hadeda Ibis, White-faced Duck, Red-eyed Dove, Squaire-tailed Drongo, Olive Thrush, Green Twispot, Red-capped Robin-Chat, Sombre Greenbul, Red-fronted Tinkerbird, Fork-tailed Drongo, Dark-backed Weaver, Green-backed Camaroptera, Golden-tailed Woodpecker, Brown Scrub-Robin, Ashy Flycatcher, Collared Sunbird, Cape White-eye, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Dark-capped Bulbul, Knysna Turaco, Lemon Dove, Black-backed Puffback, Black-headed Oriole, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Tambourine Dove, African Paradise-Flycatcher, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, Common Waxbill, African Crowned Eagle, Black-collared Barbet, Olive Sunbird, Green-Wood-Hoopoe, Amethyst Sunbird, Red-backed Mannikin, Terrestrial Brownbul, Southern Grey-Headed Sparrow. (37 species).
